Overview

I have been hunting for as long as I can remember, shooting roos and catching pigs with my brother and mates since I was a kid. Like most doggers, I enjoy seeing all the time and effort you put into your dogs pay off with them finding and catching good boars. Since recently making a move from Gunnedah NSW to managing a cattle station in central Queensland, good boars come with the territory. My boys Spencer 4 years old and Cooper 2 years old have been beating me to the ute every time they see the chest plates come out, screaming with excitement “We’re going to catch a big boar.”

They’re obsessed since I have started taking them and catching a couple of big boars with them. If they are not out pigging, they’re watching pigging DVDs or cruising around the house in their electric buggy with their sausage dog on the back looking for their next tonner. We throw the dogs on every few days while we drive around checking waters and fences and run dead beasts of a night catching some top-shelf boars.

The boys and I  were coming back from checking water when the dogs flew off the ute and started pushing up a creek. I decided to follow them along the creek, and after about a km, my old dog started circling around a bush on the creek bank before diving in, and the boar came flying out of there. The young dog joined in on the action, and I jumped out to grab the pig as the kids looked on from the cab. It was the first time I had caught a pig with the kids (Id be out too late in NSW so they could never come) so I put the pig on the back of the ute. We headed home so mum could have a look and take some photos. Living 200km from the nearest town, hunting is a good way for the whole family to enjoy something together and the kids will one day have their own dogs and be out doing their old man.
