Overview

Beefy or The Beefeater as we normally call him was born on a remote cattle station in Far North Queensland so he was exposed to pigs from a very young age and the first pig we put him on he hung straight away. He ran with his mother and my main dog at the time from 6 months of age and had found and caught his own Boar at nine months old. From then, he has never looked back. Beef was never the fastest dog he had a lot of working dog in him so he would naturally go to the lead of the mob and grab one. Whether it was a Boar or a Sow, it didn’t matter; it was just whatever was in the lead. He would run alongside them and attempt an ear grab every time. After moving down to NSW from FNQ he has gone from a finder/holder to a catch dog now for my bailers, so he has had to adapt to that which he did well. He does a good job, and it makes hunting a bit easier on him as well. I rarely use him as a running dog now, but when I have, he does on occasion miss a few. But as a catch dog he hangs pretty well, he does get flicked but will always chase and hold in the end.

His worst habit is he is a touch aggressive towards other male dogs. Bitches, pups and younger males he is fine with. When Beefy was younger, he was good on the fresh scent but would never push out too far. He was more of a short range finder. Now he’s finding is pretty average if he leaves the ute/buggy/quad I must have pretty much run over it. If he is keen the usual signs are, gets agitated on the tray, goes from side to side, gets the nose and head real high in the air when he smells something he likes. On the ground, he’ll pull hard on his lead and get busier on the ground with his nose. Beef is a multi-purpose dog, i use him on cattle as well and when in QLD i use to catch cattle with him and Harry one of my other dogs. He is a natural lead dog and will block the lead of a galloping mob of cattle. But he knows when that chest plate and tracker go on is a different game. He’s a pretty casual dog, normally pretty relaxed unless he hears the bailers barking then he won’t let you forget about him. I don’t leave him off at home much as I work on the farm and he will follow me to work. But other than that he’s pretty carefree and no drama around the yard.
