Myself, Mark my partner his two brothers Matt and Scott and good friend Justin where keen, I had high hopes for this trip with all the stories from the previous trip from Mark. We headed for Central Queensland getting there in the afternoon. The place was beautiful with open country joining amazing mountains and cliffs. We set up camp and got the dogs ready then we headed out later that night. With nothing to show from the dogs, we headed back to a wet swag hoping that the rain would help bring the pigs out the next day. In the darkness of early morning we suited up the dogs again, fingers crossed I was keen to see some action from my young dog that’s just starting out, he has been on a couple of pigs, and showing a lot of interest. We had some amazing nose dogs, hopefully they would pick something up. We drove around just as the sun was saying hello, we had a keen jump on a dam, the dogs worked the area, my young fella got out there too. Next minute two good boars came running across about 500 meters away. We grabbed all the dogs and flew down in the direction they were going. The dogs took off on scent where they crossed. All the dogs worked together and pulled up both of the pigs in another dam further down. The boys quickly stripped down and jumped in to grab the pigs.

Pretty happy with the mornings start we continued further down the road onto the boundary. The national park is on the boundary and thick as ever. Traveling along the boundary something out to the right caught our eyes, it was the biggest mob I’ve ever seen. Everything was a good size nothing small. All the dogs had already bailed leaving only my young fella tied up on the ute. Pigs and dogs were going everywhere, Mark didn’t have much hope, but I believed in him. We dropped Justin off and continued for the biggest pig. He slipped through the fence in front of us; we let the pup Pumba off. To my amazement, Pumba pulled up this big fella with the help of mark. We got him; I couldn’t be more proud. We met up with Justin; he went and got three more boars after. All decent size boars around 60 - 70kg and a big sow around 85 - 90kg. The dogs were still running around we tracked them, walking back into them finding them with no more pigs, unfortunately. But we could see where the pigs had been camping; it was a massive camp. We weren’t that far back from the thick prickly bush. Ranger took off back to the car, and we continued walking through the bush, Ranger flew back past us hot on the tail of the biggest pig I’ve ever seen. We all looked at each other in shock.

The other dogs took off to help him out, but unfortunately, they lost him in the thickest of the prickly bush. Mark believes he would have been about 130kg. After all that commotion, we headed back to the ute, Justin insisted he wanted to carry the big fella that Pumba got out on his shoulders. It made a good laugh and some entertainment for us all. We got back to camp with a well-deserved rest for the dogs, breakfast and then we weighed the boar coming in at 96kg dressed weight. Later that day we decided to walk some creeks, Ruger pulling up a boar at 82kg dressed. Impressed with the dogs we headed home the next morning. We have since returned getting pigs but that big mob outsmarts us each and every time, but we are determined to get them next time.
