Overview

The weekend couldn't come quick enough, and we were all ready for a weekend away from town. After a call to the property owner and the OK from him, we packed up and headed 2 hours west of home. Arriving at the property we couldn't unpack quick enough, the dogs were plated up, and they knew what was in store. We headed to the middle paddock of the property, which consisted of thick channels and open plains. On arrival to the first gate, the dogs were off, a rank old boar was sleeping under a fallen tree, 10 meters off to our right and the dogs were onto him in a flash. He was a good 60kg boar, what could have been a better start. It was only 20 minutes later the dogs bailed and ran into the thick channel, after waiting a bit we heard the roar of a good pig. The trackers said 300meters, within no time we were on the scene of the dogs doing battle with a big brute.

The dogs were getting smashed against the paperbark, but they held tight, and I dispatched the boar, he went a good 90kg live. The rest of the afternoon was spent catching a lot of average sized pigs and having a few stubbies. As soon as the sun went down it felt like it was up within a few hours, the alarm went off, and the crew was up and on the road again. That morning we hit the back paddocks, broken timber and bush was the country that covered most of the property, a couple of false jumps woke us right up. We knew the pigs had been here, within no time the dogs sprinted off the back and headed into the timber. The dogs hit up, pig grunts were coming from every direction, and then the bush came alive with pigs running everywhere, we cleaned a few up with the trusty 30/30 and dispatched 4 pigs with the 3 dogs which was a great going for our young bitch.

After heading back to camp for breakfast, we had a few hours well earned rest. Lunch was finished quickly and to the channels, we headed, our two main dogs Diesel and Sarge stood to watch while our young bitch KC stepped up and go solo. Before reaching the channel paddocks, a few small pigs around the 40kg mark popped up, and KC made quick work of them. The channels produced 6 good boars and a couple of sows. The weekends tally came to 16 pigs, it was a great weekend spent with family.
