Overview

  • It was a Saturday morning, and after a few phone calls, the trip was set. We decided to head out to the Belyando River to give Tarni my dog a few pigs and just get out of town and away from the crops for a change. We headed off with Chaos, Spartan, Tarni and my mate's pup Cone Head. I was driving, Matty was in the passenger seat, Max in the back and also Shannon who thought because she was female she could control the stereo, but that problem was soon fixed when we gave her the job of handing out drinks. We took our time to get to the property as there is some great country on the drive and lots of things to see. After we arrived and seen the property owner we set off to the first dam. Spartan ran over to a prickle bush and just started wagging his tail. I headed over there then Chaos caught a scent and started running, as did Tarni. She hit the prickle bush, and a good boar came out it headed straight for Tarni (My 11 month old bitch who weighs 19kg) she grabbed hold and got dragged for a bit before the others arrived on the scene, closely followed by Cone Head who at 4 months old ran straight in and grabbed hold.

We rolled the boar then loaded him on and kept on going to the back dam where the property owner had seen two boars watering the day before. We found them exactly where he had seen them, we shot the smaller boar which on inspection looked around 80kgs and the bigger fella looked around the 100kg+ mark, the dogs took off but came back empty-handed. We decided to head back and go along the river for a look. Just as we neared the last gate I saw something on the road and joked to Matty Wouldn’t it be good if that was a boar? We got closer, I realized it was a boar, and we had Spartan on the back ready to go. We kept following the boar up the road for about 300 meters then he caught a scent and jumped off, he saw the boar and took off after him. We quickly released the others, and they pulled him up within 40 meters; so we loaded him up and kept going. After a bit more driving we decided to have a camp and get up early and walk the river.

We walked 3km up and crossed over and walked back down, as we got closer Matty went back to the Ute, but I decided to walk another 150 meters around the main waterhole. Soon after all the dogs took off up the bank, and all we could hear was grunting, so we popped our heads up above the bank and seen Tarni on one pig, Spartan chasing another and Chaos chasing the 3rd pig. I sent Shannon to Tarni as she had a sow of around 30kg and sent Max after Chaos that had the biggest pig which was 40kg. I took care of Spartans pig which was a 30kg sow, then I walked back up to the others and realized Max was chasing a piglet around and Chaos was out there somewhere in the heat trying to get the 40kg fella. I told Max to deal with Shannon’s pig while I went looking for chaos. I quickly found him holding hard on the sow which was quickly dispatched; we then dragged the pigs back to the Ute.

Matty was pretty upset that he didn’t walk the extra distance but was happy for us. We loaded up and went back out to the back dam in search of the big boar again; we walked for about 600 meters when the dogs got keen and ran off. I heard a good battle going on in the distance but as we got closer the dogs returned and were pretty buggered so we decided to call it quits. We went and seen the property owner, and he was happy with the five pigs that we got and welcomed us back to help keep the numbers down. The biggest boar was 75kg dressed, it was a good hunt, and I really enjoyed it - By Kley Booth
